Fun Facts about the Iris Flower

  • According to The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language the word iris is Greek for rainbow.

  • The iris was painted by Vincent Van Gogh.

  • The iris is a symbol of spring.

  • Like the fragrant freesia the iris is a member of the Iridaceae family.

  • The iris is a fragrant flower with the exception of the Stinky Iris which has an unpleasant odor when its leaves are rubbed together.

  • The fleur-de-lys (fleur-de-lyis, plural) is French for "lily flower", and is modeled after the humble iris.
